EU assistance to Lithuania in 2007-2013

EUROPEAN UNION ASSISTANCE TO LITHUANIA IN 2007-2013
The European Commission approved the Lithuanian Strategy for the use of European Union Structural Assistance for 2007-2013 on the 26th of April, 2007.
Primary purpose of employment of EU structural assistance, according to the strategy, is to rapidly improve conditions to invest, work and live in Lithuania, to support economy so its products would reach all citizens of Lithuania. Four operational programmes (Operational Programme for the Development of Human Resources, Operational programme for the Economical Growth, Operational Programme for Promotion of Cohesion and Technical assistance Operational Programme) will support implementation of goals and tasks set in the strategy.
STRATEGY
The Government of the Republic of Lithuania approved the regulations of responsibility and distribution of functions among institutions in the implementation of strategy for the use of European Union Structural Assistance for 2007-2013 and Operational programmes on the 17th of October, 2007. The appendix of this regulations determine that Transport investment directorate is involved in the implementation of those operational programme priorities:
Operational programme for the Economical Growth for 2007–2013
- Basic economic infrastructure
- Development of trans-european transport networks
Operational Programme for Promotion of Cohesion for 2007–2013
- Environment and sustainable development
The structural assistance to investment projects of Lithuania's transport sector in 2007-2013 are provided according to Operational Programme for Economic Growth priority 4 ,,Basic economic infrastructure" action grooup 2 "Transport network" main objectives:
- implement engineering measures for traffic safety
- improve technical parameters of transport infrastructure of national and regional significance
- development of regional water transport infrastructure
Priority 5 "Development of trans-european transport networks" main objectives:
- development of land transport infrastructure links with other EU Member States and third countries; adaptation of TEN-T to the growing traffic intensity
- better utilisation of the potential of the Klaipėda Seaport as the most important transit hub of the country; increase of the competitiveness of Klaipėda Seaport
- Development of infrastructure capacities of the international airports.
- Reduction of accident rates and congestion in the TEN-T network
